Recent insights into function and control of animal respiration

Plenty of data regarding respiration have been gathered throughout decades using a limited number of species. Following Krogh’s principle, investigators commonly used easy available species for their research to study all aspects of respiratory physiology. Taking into account the phylogenetic, ecological and morphological diversity found, non-traditional species are providing new insights regarding the physiology of respiration and gas exchange and its neuronal control.
